We received a temporary foster care request from a man who needed a place for his 9yr old Boxer to stay while he had back surgery. The man shared that he hadn’t been able to get his dog’s vaccines because he couldn’t afford it and other than that, his dog was healthy, calm, and sweet. The picture that he sent also showed a healthy boxer.
We agreed to care for his Boxer, Psi Phi, while the owner had his surgery and went through physical therapy after and we agreed to also get Psi Phi up to date on his vaccines. Sadly, when he brought Psi Phi over, we saw a different dog. Poor Psi Phi was under weight and was almost entirely bald. I asked about Psi Phi’s appearance and the owner stated he thought he had worms. It was obvious that Psi Phi needed to see a vet especially when he came inside and immediately powered through almost 3 bowls of water and had multiple accidents.
We were able to get him to the vet within 2 days and after the exam, lab work, and a skin scraping, it was determined that Psi Phi had Cushings and had most likely been suffering from the disease for at least a year.
We’re so grateful to Second Life for their grant which enabled us to get Psi Phi to the vet which most likely saved his life. Psi Phi is now back with his dad and we’re continuing to support them to make sure that he can stay on his daily medication and receive the ongoing care he’ll need to manage his Cushings.
