Bruiser

Bruiser is a 12 year old Chihuahua mix who was living a quiet life with his Chihuahua brother Sweenie and his elderly owner. Together they were a happy little family and the two Chihuahuas were great company for their owner who was sadly beginning to suffer from Dementia. Their extended family was concerned about the safety of the owner and her two dogs but continued to be supportive of the owner’s choice to live independently.

Unfortunately, one evening the owner left her stove on and her house caught on fire. The owner was able to grab Bruiser but was unable to find her other dog Sweenie before exiting the house. The firefighters delivered the sad news that Sweenie had died in the fire and the owner and Bruiser were heartbroken.

After the fire, the owner moved into an assisted living facility and was able to take Bruiser with her. Afterall, it was all that she had left and she depended on Bruiser for comfort during this major life transition. As her Dementia progressed, caring for Bruiser became more difficult and the staff at the facility required that she rehome her little dog. The family contacted Transitions Pet Care who agreed to help with rehoming. Thanks to the grant from Second Life, Transitions Pet Care was able to get Bruiser ready for adoption including a vet exam, updated vaccines, senior lab work, flea and heartworm preventative, and a microchip.

Bruiser was adopted by a loving couple who had another senior Chihuahua mix. The two dogs have hit it off and Bruiser and his new family are looking forward to their new chapter together.
